Every missionary I have ever heard speak about reaching his or her culuture for Jesus first talks about building close relationships. Their testimony is always the same: people don't care that Jesus wants to be their friend until they are convinced that you will be their friend. To be a person of influence you must first be a friend. Jesus lived 30 years before he began his earthly ministry. Is it possible that for many years Jesus was simply laying a foundation of friendship? I believe so. His approach is worthy of our consideration. Be a friend first. Build trust first. Credibility is directly tied to the foundation of friendship.

I just began reading one of my favorite books...again! I have read it many times, but every time I discover something new I hadn't seen before or remembered from the last time I read it. The book is The Root of the Righteous, by A. W. Tozer. The title is derived from the wisdom of Solomon: No one is established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous will never be moved (Proverbs 12:3). We live in a day that is preoccupied with the visible success or fruit of a person or organization, yet ignores the root from which the fruit sprang. Keep your eye on the source. A tree can weather almost any storm if its root is sound. However, a branch that breaks off from the tree may bloom briefly, but it will soon perish. There is no lasting life apart from the root.

Growing in faith means that our confidence in God is getting stronger. We are learning to depend on who He is even though we don't know what He's doing. Abraham was rewarded for his confidence in God. Hebrews 11:8 reads, "By faith Abraham obedyed...and he went out, not knowing where he was going." Abraham could leave his future in God's hands. God knew what he was doing. Abraham was rewarded for recognizing that if God knew, that was enough. Now that's real faith!

A friend of mine recently preached an excellent sermon on the difference between being a religious person and trusting Jesus. His simple point is that being religious places all of the focus on yourself; i.e. your performance, your obedience, your good behavior, etc. By contrast, trusting Jesus puts the focus on the finished work of Christ on the cross. Trusting Jesus recognizes that God's acceptance is not something we earn or deserve, but is a gift that we humbly receive. Where do you put your confidence? In religion or in Jesus? No one can earn God's acceptance by doing religious things. The reason Christ came to earth was to do for us what we could not do for ourselves. Jesus paid a debt he did not owe to give us a gift we could not buy.

Faith sees the invisible. Believing is looking. Faith is the inward habit of looking at God. To look up, trust, and obey is to exercise faith. The common denominator of the Bible characters we admire most is faith. They walked by faith, prayed by faith, obeyed by faith and endured by faith. Believing is turning the heart's attention to Jesus. Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:1-2).

One of the root meanings of the word disciple is "learner." But the first century understanding of the word disciple was "follower." A disciple is a fundamentally a follower. Do you approach Jesus that way? It is enouraging to see that many professing Christians are now making discipleship to Jesus the core of their religious life. What does that mean? A true disciple of Jesus is someone who does the things Jesus said to do. A disciple is someone who devotes himself to becoming the kind of person who obeys Jesus easily, naturally and routinely. Lastly, a disciple is someone who belongs to groups whose activities are explicitly designed to make disciples. Think of Jesus as your leader and yourself as his follower. You will mature and the people around you will be blessed.

In Luke 15 Jesus taught that a relationship with God begins with genuine repentence that results in a party. The younger son in this famous story (see Luke 15:11-32) spent many days living away from God until he finally came to his senses. Upon the realization that he had made a huge mistake, he humbled himself and returned home. In his own mind he was no longer worthy to be called a "son." To his surprise, The father (God) welcomed him home with open arms and instructed everyone to come together for a huge celebration. The party was in honor of his son whom he feared was dead. That's how God views every person who humbles himself and turns back to Him. Don't be afraid. God is good and when you look up to heaven you will see friendly eyes looking back at you in love.

He is changeless and timeless. In the Bible the creator of heaven and earth is called "God" and the "Lord." But what is God like? What kind of God is he? Thankfully, God has revealed himself through nature, the Bible and his Son, Jesus. Self-revelation makes it possible for us to know him. Do you know God or merely know about him?

When the Lord called Moses, he began by revealing Himself. God didn't assume that Moses knew who was speaking to him. Once Moses realized the identity of the speaking voice, God revealed to Moses four realities: His concern, plan, choice and power. We should approach the Bible as a voice from heaven not a user's manual. It is not a book that was once written -- it is a Voice that is speaking here and now. Just as God spoke to Moses from within the bush, God speaks to us from within the Bible. All Scripture is "God breathed." Every time you open the Bible you are standing on "holy ground."

Jesus is the most important person we can ever know. He wants us to hear his message, receive his love and experience his life. "Gospel" is the word God uses in the Bible to announce his completed plan to save the world. The gospel is God's gospel. He now delegates to his followers the job of announcing it. The Gospel is not good advice to men, but good news about Christ. It is the message of what God has done for all people through his Son, Jesus. The gospel of Jesus Christ is that He died for us and rose from the dead to live in us. The gospel is not a religion of rules, it is a message of hope.

At its core, disciple-making is people development. In Luke 9:1-10 we see three principles that Jesus practiced to develop the 12 apostles. First, he identified and invested in those he believed in. These men were not randomly selected. Second, he provided them with opportunities to develop their ministry skills. Third, he spent time debriefing with them. Who do you believe in enough to coach and develop the way Jesus did the Twelve? There's no other way to prepare people for service and leadership.

Last week, Pastor Peter Scazzero, from Queens New York spoke at the church I attend. In short, he challenged us to consider how the sheer pace of life can take its toll on every aspect of our humanity. People who are always in a hurry have little time to nurture important relationships or take care of themselves. The solution is to slow down. By doing so you will improve your spiritual and emotional health and live with greater integrity. Peter is the author of the book, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality. I have read his book twice and it is one of my favorities. I highly recommend it. Psalm 46:1 says, "Be still and know that I am God." Many successful people are driven and insecure. They're too busy to practice any form of solitude and silence. But it would benefit most of us to slow down, look up to God and then evaluate what drives us. I encourage you to read his book soon.

Does God like some people more than others? Not according to the Bible! Then why do some people find God and others don't? The answer may be that some people seek to know him and others do not. Abraham was an ordinary man who wanted to find God. The only thing we know about Abraham before God called him is that he had a seeking heart. The Scriptures reveal that before God called him, "Abraham worshiped other gods" (Joshua 24:2). Although Abraham did not know God, he was still loking. Abraham was looking for God and the Lord saw Abraham's seeking heart. God rewarded his search. Do you want to know God? The people who find God are those who passionately seek him. God always rewards those who earnestly seek him.

I recently shared the following poem by A. M. Overton at a young man's funeral. This poem is one of my favorites and it offered great encouragement to the family. It goes like this: My Father's way may twist and turn, my heart may throb and ache,

My cherished plans may go astray, my hopes may fade away,

But still I'll trust my Lord to lead, for He doth know the way. Tho' night be dark and it may seem that day will never break,

I'll pin my faith, my all in Him, He maketh no mistake. There's so much now I cannot see, My eyesight's far too dim,

But come what may, I'll simply trust and leave it all to Him. For by and by the mist will lift and plain it all He'll make.

Through all the way, tho' dark to me, He made not one mistake.

A. W. Tozer noted that God's voice existed in the world before the Bible was written. God's Word in the Bible has power because it corresponds with God's Word in the universe. The Ten Commandments were spoken before they were written. God did not write a book and send it by messenger to be read without his help. God spoke a Book and lives in His spoken words. He constantly speaks to us in hopes that his words will penetrates our hearts. For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edge sword, it penetrates even to the dividing of soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12). It is the living word of God that affects the hearts of all men and brings light to the soul.

In the early days of the Christian church there were people who became Christians but somehow, never grew up. The book of Hebrews describes their condition as a kind of prolonged spiritual infancy. They should be teachers by now, but in reality are still spiritual infants (Hebrews 5:12-13). This condition is common today. The reason many believers don't grow up is they never become self-feeding disciples. In short, they are still dependent upon others to provide their spiritual nourishment. Make 2010 the year you decide to take responsibility for your own spiritual development. Ask God to help you discipline yourself. Set aside regular times each week to open God's word and listen for His voice. Jesus died for us but will not read for us.

Christianity is a Living Person...living in...a living person. Somebody living in somebody. Christ in you, Christ in me. The Bible teaches that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, was buried, and raised on the third day according to the Scriptures (I Corinthians 15:3-4). This verse reminds us that the gospel of Jesus Christ places an equal emphasis on both Christ's death for us and his life in us. The clear spiritual progression from the Gospel narratives to the book of Acts, and continuing throughout the rest of the New Testament is this: First, thorugh his death on the cross Jesus gave himself for us. Then, having raised from the dead he put his Spirit in us. Today Jesus continues his work on earth through us. True Christianity is a Living Person...living in...a living person.

Luke wrote two books in the New Testament: The gospel of Luke and Acts. Although many Bibles refer to Acts as, The Acts of the Apostles, I would suggest that a better understanding is The Continued Acts of Jesus Christ. Luke's gospel records what Jesus began to do (Acts 1:1). The book of Acts records what he continued to do by His Spirit through the members of a new body on earth, the Church. Jesus promised to build his church and the book of Acts records that he fulfilled his promise. Our privilege is that today Jesus continues to do his work through us.
