In the March-April 2011 issue, Steve Smith writes a tremendous article entitled, The Power of Precedent and Promise. He points out that when Saul was King, there seemed to be no precedent for killing giants, like Goliath. Ironically, there was a precedent, but it had apparently been forgotten by everyone except David. 400 years earlier, Caleb, at the age of 85, drove out three giants from the mountain God had promised him (Joshua 15:14). Around forty years before that, Moses and his army defeated a giant named Og (Numbers 21:33-35). According to Scripture, Og slept in a 13-feet bed (Deuteronomy 3:11). He was so frightening that God appeared to Moses personally to promise his deliverence. Did the army of Israel that faced the giant Goliath remember these stories? If they did, they dismissed them as irrelevant: This can't happen here, our situation is different. This can't happen through us, Moses and Caleb were special. This can't happen today, God no longer works that way. Whether they remembered the precedent or not, David trusted in God's promise to fight for God's people. Let's follow his example and live our lives based on God's promises. At the end of the day, if you have a promise from God, it is enough.
