Dear Fellow Disciple-makers,

I need to develop motivation

I can honestly say there are some days that I have very little motivation. I don't always know how it happens, but at times I'm simply not excited about anything, even the things of God.

Are you simply going through the motions?

My sense is that I'm not alone. Many people have told me that they experience virtually the same thing. We can all relate to the times we have to pretend that we care. We know what it means to manufacture energy because our excitement has died and we're simply going through the motions. We know when we've lost interest and are not truly invested in a project or cause. Since a magic motivational pill does not exist, what are we supposed to do?

Fire tends to go out

First, acknowledge that these feelings are normal. On any given day, motivation is often a missing factor. The concern is to not allow your lack of motivation to become a chronic condition. William Booth, the British Methodist preacher who founded the Salvation Army once said, The tendency of fire is to go out, so guard the fire on the altar of your heart. As you make disciples, don't assume that people are always motivated. Inside their heart is a spiritual fire that continually needs attention. Don't ignore this vital area.

Motivation from Jesus

Jesus was once asked, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?" His answer, in my opinion, is the most motivational verse in the Bible. "Hear O Israel the Lord your God, is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these" (Mark 12:28-31).

Develop motivation from time with God

When my personal motivation is low, it often reveals that I have forgotten or neglected what is most important. Whenever someone or something is wearing me down I know it's time to slow down and get alone with God.
Do you have a relationship with God?
Our relationship with the Lord is the purest source of motivation. Spiritual motivation comes from drawing close to God and aligning your heart with his. Formulas, strategic planning and mission statements pale by comparison.

Restore your soul

Our soul is slowly restored when we remember that there is only one true God and that this God is eager to be our friend. So slow down, narrow your focus and stay in your lane. Love God with all your heart. Love your neighbor as yourself. This is a foundational and motivational principle for every follower of Jesus. Take time to meditate on Mark 12:28-31 and teach those you are mentoring to do the same.

If you're too busy to study the Bible, you're too busy.
We have a devotional, Bible Study - Make Time for It to help you develop motivation to have a daily time with God.
