Dear Fellow Disciple-Maker,

Christmas is a time a giving. We all like to give and receive gifts at Christmas. Even now, many of us can remember some of the gifts we received as children. Those gifts have probably served their purpose and today are nowhere to be found.

By contrast, God's gifts are timeless. God gives people timeless messages that keep on providing joy, comfort and hope. In the Bible, there is a message that summarizes the very heart of the Christmas story. It is found in the words that were spoken by an angel sent by God to a group of humble shepherds. The mind-blowing message is this: God has come into the world in the form of a baby.

The scripture reads: And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger" (Luke 2:10-12). This is God's astonishing gift to wayward people like you and me – a timeless message that speaks to hearts then and now.

Good News

The timeless gift is a message of good news. It is good news, not merely good advice on how to live our lives. It is the good news that Jesus has come from heaven to show us that we don't have to be good at being good for God to love us.

The good news is that God has provided a Savior. It is staggering that God would loves sinners, but the Christmas story proves that he does. The timeless message is that God does not hold our sins against us, but pardons our sins through Jesus.

Great Joy

The timeless gift is a message of great joy – a joy that continues. It is wonderful to learn that God is determined to rescue us. The Bible is a rescue story and Jesus is the Great Rescuer. The news that God loves us enough to provide His own Son as a payment for our sins is beyond words. It give us wondrous relief, unspeakable joy, and unceasing gratitude.

The joy of Christmas comes directly from God's heart to our hearts. It is not tied to your circumstances. It is not based on our health, finances, family relationships or work. God loves us for ourselves and values our love more than anything in the universe. The gift of God's love produces a lasting joy that the world cannot take away.

For All People

The Christmas story is a timeless message of grace for people from all nations. Grace treats people better than they deserve. In a world where all have sinned, everyone needs forgiveness and hope. The mistakes of our past are nothing compared to the sins in our heart. Our wayward hearts have a deep need for God's mercy.

Jesus is the gracious gift that God offers to every man, woman and child. Can you see how relentlessly committed God feels toward you? God has personally loved you before you were born, and he wants you to fully grasp the depth of that love.

A Gift to Receive

The shepherds were told that they would find proof that the message they heard was true. The sign would be a baby lying in a manger – a feeding trough for animals. When they saw the baby in the manger, they didn't understand the entire scope of God's salvation, but they did realize that God's word was true. They heard a message of good news and great joy. They heard a message that was for all people, including them.

Can you sense God speaking to your heart right now? A Savior is born for you. Will you believe in Him and personally receive him into your heart? Jesus is God's timeless gift to you today. Merry Christmas!
